"Education Shouldn't Be for the Privileged Few, but for the Deserving Many"...
In 1988 Charo Uceda co-founded, together with Juan J. Uceda and Doris Uceda, the Uceda Institute becoming its Chief Academic Director. Uceda English Institute / Uceda School, comprises a chain of ESL schools which are Federally Accredited. At present Uceda English Institute/ School have more than 20 locations, under different-members-of-the-family’s ownership and administrations, throughout the United States, serving thousands of students from all over the world.
In 1989, realizing that existing ESL materials often failed to provide learners with necessary tools for success in the acquisition of English as a second language, she wrote The Charo Uceda English Series, and “The Charo Uceda, English at Home”, including textbooks, videos and Audio CDs.
Since 2006, Miss Uceda has an academic agreement with Alas Peruanas, (UAP); a Peruvian university with a yearly enrollment of over 80,000 students; whereby Uceda Institute maintains offices and classrooms within the many different university locations throughout Peru, offering basic English Certification for graduates and undergraduates.
In 2008, Miss Uceda received a Masters in Applied Linguistics from Columbia University – Teachers College, (TC).In June 2009, she was invited to be a member of the President’s Advisory Council at Teachers College, Columbia University. The President’s Advisory Council is formed by a group of distinguished individuals (including academics, policy makers, and entrepreneurs) who collaborate in strategizing new directions for the College and devising new ways to foster innovation in education. Understanding that the globalized world of the 21st Century has imposed new demands and challenges on both teaching and learning, Miss Uceda has become a fervent supporter and a passionate proponent of the effective implementation of emergent technologies inside the classroom and out, in order to bridge gaps of distance and time and universally foster the development of skills and techniques leading towards autonomy in learning. As a result of her serious commitment to lifelong learning, in January of 2009 she was accepted in a Masters Degree Program in Educational Technologies at Harvard University, graduating in May of 2012.
In the early part of 2012, Miss Uceda also accepted the invitation to become Jose Carlos Mariategui’sPresident. Founded by Juan J. Uceda in 1972, the Jose Carlos Mariategui PEAD (JMC), is a non-for-profit Peruvian organization which has the distinction of being the pioneer in distance education in Peru and throughout South America, offering more than 60 short career courses and certifications in the areas of education, business administration and health, training thousands of professionals annually.
In June of 2012, Miss Uceda accepted the invitation to become a Reviewer, for CEA, (The Commission on English Language Program), a national accreditation organization, based in Virginia, USA.
Furthermore, in 2009 she established the “Charo Uceda Teachers College Scholarship Fund”, helping selected, remarkable master degree students who experience financial hardship. She is also a member of the “Grace Dodge Society”, a membership that includes her intentions to bequeath a portion of her Estate to Teachers College at the time of her passing.
During 2016 and into late 2017, Ms. Uceda led her team to complete the development of CUSMS, (The Charo Uceda School Management System) – A copyrighted software program. This application is a sophisticated program managing administration, academics and auditing/accounting, as well as analytical tools; a system that answers to the many accreditation standards providing students with an academic experience equal to the best colleges and universities in the U.S.
During the 2018 cycle, Ms. Uceda is working with an ad-hoc team to create and execute the accredited “Charo Uceda TESOL Certification Program” that will be offered in an ONLINE and Blended study formats through the charouceda.com. This Website will link all the Charo Uceda initiatives, educational programs, monthly newsletters, as well as her charitable endeavors.
In early 2018 The Charo Uceda Women’s Empowerment Lecture Series was established to advance the conversation about issues impacting women in the areas of educational policy, nutrition and psychology. The goal of the series is to raise awareness, provide possible solutions to women’s challenges, and inspire action from students, alumni and faculty. National and international speakers, chosen by the Provost and faculty members in consultation with Ms. Uceda will share their experiences about topics that promote and celebrate women’s achievement over adversity and overall empowerment. (This Lecture Series was created in memory of her mother, Ines Uceda).
While Miss Uceda resides in New York and Florida, she travels domestically and internationally, presenting workshops on topics related to Applied Linguistics, TESOL and Integration of Technology in Education and Entrepreneurship. She is an avid reader and enjoys Architecture, History, Music and the Arts.
P.S. From 1991 to 2009, Miss Uceda owned and operated multi-level parking garages in Uptown Manhattan and the Bronx, as well as a full service print shop and Laundromats. In 2010 she sold her interest in all businesses, retaining only the educational ventures in order to dedicate herself to the cause of education.
